#8 Gladys Graves

Gladys is mentioned in ‘No Place for a Lady’, but there was no picture of her, so I wanted to find one.

Gladys Graves (Canadian pilot)

Gladys was the first woman to join the Edmonton Aero Club and, in June 1928, said she was hoping to be the second woman in Canada to get a private pilot’s licence. However, in September, she married George Walker (a lawyer who later rose to be Chairman of the CPR), so her training took a back seat for a little while.

She took her first solo flight in August 1929 and got her PPL a month later – making her the eighth woman in Canada.

Gladys had one daughter and died in 1982, aged 88.
