After school, William started working as a bank clerk for the Bank of Montreal.
He enlisted on 3 April 1917 and was sent to Ypres for operations to capture Passchendaele Ridge. On 28 September 1918, he was run over by a lorry at Cambrai. His right arm was fractured and he suffered with difficulty breathing and infections.

William was evacuated to England for treatment, but in February, he caught influenza, which developed into pneumonia, and he died on 24 February 1919, aged 22.
